Day 98
Friday, July 4, 2014
It’s only middle of the day Friday, but I probably won’t
write again until at least Sunday.
On Wednesday we got several bits and pieces done, especially
getting some bills paid. We left in the
late afternoon to head for NB since a storm was predicted for Thursday.
Being here I’ve done pretty much nothing but watch movies
and old shows on TV. It’s relaxing; but
in the back of my mind is always how much I still have to get done. At least I’ll have boxes to work with when I
get home.
We “rode out” the first Atlantic storm of the season. It was a bit odd to not be watching the
constant coverage on TV (no TV here, only Netflix .. they check weather on the
computer). So we actually didn’t know
until late in the evening that Arther had made it to cat 2, and was heading
ashore very near us! During the
afternoon on Thursday there were intermintnt bouts of rain, a bit of
thunder. The wind never got bad at
all. Late in the evening a computer
update showed that we were right on the outer edge of the eye wall .. and yet,
at the time, it was neither raining nor windy.
It never got worse than any normal summer storm. Sometime during the late night the power did
go off .. but only for about 15 minutes!
All in all, it was a very anticlimactic experience (and I have “rode out”
several hurricanes in the past!).
For what it was worth, we had plenty of flashlights and
candles, a hand-crank radio, plenty of bottled water, and all of the
electronics were fully charged (not knowing what might or might not work).
Today is clear and bright, and hot! I have no idea if we’re going to fireworks
tonight, but I hope so. There’s a place
very near here with a good view that doesn’t involve getting into downtown
traffic jams.
Meantime, it’s a lazy day!
